Aurora House Community Youth Mentor Workshops:

Healing Camp: Restorative Centered Care – four 3-hour workshops

Workshops offer an important departure from solely viewing people through the lens of harm and focus
on asset-driven strategies that highlight possibilities for well-being. An asset-driven strategy
acknowledges that people are much more than 'the worst thing that happened to them', and builds upon
their experiences, knowledge, skills, and curiosity as positive traits to be enhanced. After this training
adults will be certified through AHC's Mentorship Program to become mentors and are also able to be
placed as an intern with our organization.

self-sufficiency due to the complexity of their needs and the many challenges they face.

HQ for appointments.

Peer Support Services:
One-on-one and group peer support provide adults with help, advice, guidance, and support from
individuals with lived experience. Our AHC Peer Support Specialists have lived experience in
community-serving systems (Mental Health, Foster Care, Juvenile Justice, DOJ etc.) and have been
trained to support transition-aged adults. This model is different from the traditional youth and adult-
service models in that it uses support via lived experience rather than impersonal and clinical expertise. AHC
is here to listen, help identify strengths and needs, identify supports, suggest resources, and help
formulate next steps.

Counseling:

This service is for youth and adults who are experiencing significant emotional and behavioral
difficulties related to traumatic life events. Youth and parents learn skills to help process, manage and
resolve distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to trauma.  This enhances safety, growth,
parenting skills, and family communication. Participants will be eligible for individualized therapy and
group therapy that meets therapeutic criteria. This service is for participants from the age of 14-and
older.

Substance Use Disorder counseling:
Qualifying participants will be offered services that provide education and support in the area of
substance use disorders. Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will be used in
order to assist the clients in obtaining a healthy sense of self and community.

Life Skills Development:

Our Life Skills Development program aims to increase self-esteem, develop healthy attitudes, and improve knowledge of
general life skills. All of which promote healthy and positive personal development. Participants will be
guided through a series of classes that cover financial education, fitness, meal preparation,
appointment setting, and more. This section will assist participants to become as self-sufficient as
possible.

Trauma Treatment on Demand:
Trauma-informed care requires sensitivity to the physical, psychological, and emotional needs of people,
and a very purposeful awareness of effort to avoid re-traumatization. We instead promote safety,
healing, and positive development. We focus on helping youth and adults to develop positive
relationships with caring, positive adults, and on activities and interventions that build the cognitive and
social-emotional skills kids need to develop to their full potential. This service is will also be available
after hours and on weekends starting in 2023.

Moving from Trauma-informed to Trauma-Responsive:

● Healing Trauma (individual/group)
● Exploring Trauma (individual/group)

● Beyond Trauma (individual)

Advocacy:
Youth-led community projects focus on economic justice, creating jobs, fostering local economies, and
many other issues important to youth in the community. Their actions will be self-driven and assisted with
adult allies or represented by youth/adult partnerships. With critical thinking and reflection built in,
these opportunities can create new knowledge, develop new services, and foster community
empowerment for everyone involved.  This includes youth and adults’ engagement which is an important
component of youth development because it can help build human and social services. Youth Advocacy is
an area of practice and knowledge development that seeks to engage people in democracy through hands-
on learning opportunities.

Youth Development

Aurora House Community Youth Development Program:

The Aurora House Community Youth Development Program focuses on prevention efforts to reduce youth risk behaviors by taking a holistic approach to engaging youth and communities to promote positive peer groups, build soft and life skills, strengthen social and emotional competence, foster healthy relationships, develop on future aspirations, and building a strong support system.

Youth Development will include in-school and after-school programs that will consist of modules and activities on mentorship, leadership, emotional intelligence, peer-to-peer education, cultural activities, community service, arts, mental health first aid, communications training, and many more. In order for the Youth Development Program to be truly successful, it would be essential to have a place and space of our own that, we could utilize to provide services for our youth and community.  We need classroom spaces to host community events/activities and provide an overall safe and supportive environment. This will promote positive youth development and offers a variety of opportunities to help prepare and equip our youth for a successful transition to adulthood.
